Clinical teaching for health professionals*

Objectives At fourth-year level it is expected that graduates will be able, on completion of this course, to develop an understanding of theories of teaching and learning used in clinical education; critically appraise the impact of such theories on learning in health care environments and on clinical practice; apply clinical teaching processes in practice and evaluate their effectiveness; assess clinical learning in health care environments; design an innovative teaching program related to health care or health promotion. At fifth-:year level additional objectives will be to develop and implement an innovative teaching program related to health care or health promotion; and to design and conduct an evaluation of the health care or health promotion program implemented.

Synopsis This subject will introduce the student to a variety of different theories and models of clinical teaching and encourage the students to develop strategies for application within their own clinical practice. Students will perform, critically analyse and evaluate different methods of clinical teaching within a range of clinical environments with the aim of developing evidence-based strategies to support their roles as clinical teachers.

Assessment Assessment will be by seminar presentation and paper: 50% · Clinical portfolio: 50% totalling 3000 words at fourth-year level and 5000 words at fifth-year level (or equivalent).
