Objectives Through a variety of in-class, clinically based and student-directed activities, this subject is expected to enable the student to demonstrate knowledge and skills related to the care of critically ill or high risk patients requiring anaesthesia; demonstrate assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of pain management strategies; describe strategies for dealing with patient crisis management in the operating suite; work collaboratively with the anaesthetist in the preanaesthetic assessment and education of patients; undertake a diversity of roles within a variety of contexts in the field of anaesthetic nursing.

Synopsis The emphasis of this subject is development of the role of the anaesthetic nurse. This subject aims to further develop knowledge facilitating the expansion of specialised practice roles for the anaesthetic nurse in areas such as pain management, preoperative assessment of patients and management of day surgery. This subject will draw upon previously learned concepts to examine pre, intra and postoperative care of critically ill patients undergoing anaesthesia in a variety of contexts. Patients with spinal injuries or burns are examples of high risk patients which call upon the nurse to have specialised knowledge to provide optimal care during anaesthesia.
