Objectives Through a variety of in-class, clinically based and student directed activities, this subject is expected to enable the student to provide comprehensive pre, intra and postoperative care to patients who are undergoing specialist anaesthetic interventions; apply knowledge and skills related to the care of high risk patients requiring anaesthesia; demonstrate knowledge and skills related to the management of situations where the patient requires resuscitation, stabilisation, or other supportive interventions; provide competent and anticipatory assistance to the anaesthetist.

Synopsis This subject will focus on the nursing knowledge necessary to provide care for a patient undergoing specialist anaesthesia and high risk patients with special anaesthetic needs. This subject will draw upon previously learned concepts to examine pre, intra and postoperative care of patients undergoing a range of specialist anaesthetic interventions. The neonate is one example of a high risk patient which calls upon the nurse to have specialist knowledge to provide optimal care during anaesthesia and in the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU). Pharmacokinetics and pharmacology, electrocardiograph (ECG) and haematological interpretation, and Advanced Life Support (ALS) are examples of critical areas which will be considered. Knowledge and skill acquisition in these key areas will allow for competent and anticipatory assistance to the anaesthetist and will facilitate informed decision making in the PACU.
