Objectives Through a variety of in-class, clinically based and student directed activities this subject is expected to enable the student to evaluate the health status of the child with a complex health problem; develop, implement, and evaluate a holistic plan of care to meet the individual requirements of the child and family experiencing a complex health problem; competently apply specialised children's nursing knowledge and skills to a variety of situations arising in a children's nursing environment; independently manage a caseload of clients in a children's nursing environment; maintain collaborative relationships within the multidiciplinary children's services team; appropriately manage ethical dilemmas relating to the child and family; consistently act in a manner congruent with the principles of family centred care; demonstrate leadership by functioning as a clinical resource/mentor for less experienced colleagues.

Synopsis This subject will focus on the nursing concepts, principles and strategies necessary to provide therapeutic nursing care for the child with complex health problems. In addition to the management of the serious episode, the complexities of planning transitional and discharge care, dealing with the experiences of loss and grief, and the management of ethical dilemmas are emphasised. The overall aim of the subject will be to consolidate the nursing assessment, intervention and evaluation skills essential to providing complex, supportive care within a children's nursing setting.
