Objectives At the completion of this unit students will be able to frame hypotheses and design algorithms, software and/or experiments to test these hypotheses; be able to collect, analyse and interpret data and report on their research results in oral and written presentations; and appreciate the principles and methods of scientific research.

Synopsis The honours program provides students with the first opportunity for in-depth research and study in areas of interest to them. Students who have completed forty-eight points or more of third-year subjects related to software development and who have achieved a credit average or above, are eligible for admission to the honours program. The program has two components: a coursework component and a project component. Depending upon whether the honours student chooses either a 50 per cent research project or a 25 per cent applied research project then the points will be twenty-four points of coursework and twenty-four points of project or thirty-six points of coursework and twelve points of project respectively. The guide to the honours program, which is available from the school at any time, provides detailed advice and instructions about the project components and available subjects. For the project, each student is associated with a supervisor who advises on coursework and research. A list of supervisors is available from the school. Students can discuss any project that they find interesting with the listed project supervisors. They may also bring their own topics to potential supervisors or negotiate with supervisors for possible redefinition of existing projects. Honours students are expected to attend and participate in the seminar program run by the school throughout the year.
