MTH1010

Functions and their applications

C Varsavsky

6 points - One 2-hour lecture, one 1-hour problem class, one 1-hour computer laboratory class and two 1-hour discussion classes per fortnight - First semester - Clayton - Recommendations: students who have not achieved an average grade of C or above in CATs 2 and 3 for VCE Mathematical Methods units 3 and 4 are advised to complete this subject prior to MTH1020 - Prohibitions: GAS1601, MAT1049

Objectives On the completion of this subject, students will understand the key characteristics of linear, exponential, trigonometric and polynomial functions; will be able to use function algebra and to represent functions as tables, graphs, and mathematical expressions; have developed skills in using functions as models for real-life behaviour; have developed skills in the use of computer software as an aid for modelling; and have developed and/or strengthened their ability to work in teams and write reports.

Synopsis Functions, domain and range, function representation; different types of functions including linear, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, polynomial and rational functions; function algebra; composition of functions; inverse of functions; transformations; modelling with functions; rates of change.

Assessment Examination (3 hours): 50% - Projects: 50%
