Objectives On the completion of this subject, students will be able to understand basic concepts in statistical modelling and applied probability; apply statistical techniques to practical problems in areas such as biology, medicine and industry.
Synopsis Revision of basic probability, simple probability models; random variables and their distributions, some standard distributions and their applications, sampling distributions of mean and variance; introduction to bivariate distributions, conditional expectation, simple linear regression and least squares estimation, introduction to parametric inference, chi-square goodness-of-fit test; use of Minitab.
Assessment Examination (2 hours - Clayton; 3 hours - Gippsland and distance education): 70% - Assignments and/or tests: 30%
