Objectives At the completion of this subject students should have acquired a knowledge of the materials and technology of book production, as a background to professional studies, as an illustration of historical processes, and as an illumination of current problems, particularly in preservation.
Synopsis A study of the printed word in the Western tradition from the mid-fifteenth century onwards, concentrating on the changing technologies of book production, but also considering matters of publishing, authorship, the spread of printing and catalogues of early printed books. The subject includes site visits.
