Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to describe, evaluate and apply methods of organising school libraries and information services in relation to other organisations; allocate financial provision in relation to preparation of estimates and budget control; describe and evaluate the utilisation of personnel within school libraries and be aware of the principles of personnel management; know the principles of developing architectural briefs for the designing of facilities for school library services; describe, evaluate and apply methods of acquiring curriculum resources and of controlling and making available such materials for use; consider methods of evaluating the educational effectiveness of the school library so as to be able to compile and maintain statistics and prepare and submit reports relevant to the development of library services; and devise objectives for service and carry out plans for implementation, promotion and innovation.
Synopsis The subject examines the school library both as a complex system and as an organisation. Topics covered include the organisation of school libraries and information services in relation to other organisations; the preparation of estimates and budget control; the principles of personnel management in relation to school libraries; the development of architectural briefs for the design of school library facilities; the acquisition and control of curriculum resources; the evaluation of a school library's educational effectiveness; the maintenance of statistics and the preparation of reports concerning the development of library services; the planning and implementation of services, promotions and innovations. The subject is taught by lectures, workshops, case studies, study guides, teaching notes and individual research.
