Objectives On completion of this subject students will be able to describe the organisation and operation principles of computer systems, and become competent users of DOS and UNIX operating systems.

Synopsis Overview of computer organisation and operation principles; number systems, internal data representation; logic and Boolean algebra; CPU; primary memory and secondary memory; input and output devices. System software: OS concepts, DOS, UNIX, Windows, Windows NT, Windows 95, language translators; common application software; security and anti-virus issues; data communication and computer network; the social aspects of computer applications. Access to the university's computer systems through an internet service provider is compulsory for distance education students.

Assessment Assignments: 40% - Examination: 60%
