Objectives On completion of the subject, students will have knowledge of the methods, techniques and tools used in contemporary business environments to manage IT projects, possible organisational structures and the roles of people in an IT project, and have an understanding of the relationship between overall project management and the process adopted by the organisation in conducting the project, the professional responsibilities of individuals operating within a team context, the impact of the iterative software development lifecycle on IT project management and the impact of pressures associated with real-life projects, such as changed requirements, deadlines and budgets.
Synopsis This subject introduces the fundamental
principles, tools and techniques of project management in an IT context. The
conceptual material presented in lectures is reinforced by practical
application within the context of a software development project. Students will
work in project teams with roles allocated to each group member. The project
will be defined against a set process model. Project definition, estimation,
and tracking and reporting techniques presented in lectures will be employed
during the course of the project. Real-life problems will be injected into the
project in the form of changes to user requirements, budget and time-lines.
Emphasis will be placed on the ability to provide up-to-date management
information on the actual state of the project against established milestones:
reports will be requested on an
ad-hoc basis. A project review phase will be used to analyse and report on
project estimates against actual time, cost and resource expenditure.
