Digital design I

B Qiu

6 points - Two 1-hour lectures and one 2-hour practical class per week - First semester - Clayton - Prerequisites: CSE1101 or equivalent

Objectives At the completion of this subject, students should be able to carry out design and analysis on combinational and sequential digital systems, describe and syntheses digital systems using preliminary hardware description language, apply programmable logic devices for the implementation of digital systems, understand practical issues related to digital design and have knowledge of some typical digital circuits.

Synopsis This subject aims to provide students with knowledge and skills for practical digital systems design and analysis. It will discuss different models of clocked synchronous state machines, Algorithmic State Machines (ASM), ASM charts and synthesis, state reduction and state assignment, typical combinational and sequential digital circuits. The subject will introduce Hardware Description Language for digital system design and implementation, programmable logic and gate array devices and their applications for digital circuit and system design and implementation. This subject will also discuss the application memory elements and issues on metastability, synchroniser failure, system testability and reliability.

Assessment Examination (2 hours): 60% - Practical work: 40%
