Objectives At the completion of this subject, students should be able to understand the nature, structure and role of systems, in particular information systems, in optimising the achievement of organisational goals; understand how personal, organisational and societal activities may be supported and/or transformed through the use of computer networks and distributed information systems; understand the components of distributed information systems and how they work together as a system; make appropriate use of professional communications techniques and understand their importance in organisations; use distributed information systems to support effective professional communication.

Synopsis Transforming personal, organisational and societal activities through the use of computer networks and distributed information systems. Examples of distributed information systems: electronic commerce applications, small office home office, computer support for cooperative work. Optimising the achievement of organisational goals through the use of distributed information systems and technology. The systems approach. Types, functions and components of information systems and distributed information systems. The information systems development process: an overview of tasks, milestones and deliverables. Professional communication techniques.
