Objectives At the completion of this subject students should know about communication systems design; understand modern business communication systems; and be aware of developments of communication techniques.
Synopsis Data communications: basic concepts in data, audio and video communications, network components, multiplexing techniques, terminals, digital PABX, transmission control, error control and efficiency, security and encryption, network architectures, network design, network operations, common carrier services, local area networks, network standards, trends in communications. Technologies: fundamental technologies, computers and communications, developing technologies, data, text, audio processing. Image processing: graphics, micrographics, optical systems, video, artificial intelligence, office automation - composite document processing, electronic mail, document output processes, teleconferencing, document storage and retrieval, information system services, telex, teletext, videotex, electronic funds transfer systems, electronic publications, video-audio education system.
Assessment Written (2000 words): 50% - Examination (2 hours): 50%
