Database systems and data management III

Objectives At the completion of this subject students should be able to understand the importance of data management within organisations; familiar with the techniques, technology and organisational roles and structures necessary to support data management; capable of designing and implementing relational and multidimensional databases; familiar with network and hierarchical data models; capable of using SQL for management of databases.

Synopsis This subject is designed to introduce students to fundamental concepts of database and data management within organisations. The main topics include the motivation for data management, relational and legacy (hierarchical and network) database systems, designing and implementing relational databases, use of the SQL language, dimensional modelling and data warehousing, data quality, document management and the data management function within organisations.

Assessment Assignments: 40% - Examination (2 hours): 60% - Note that a pass on the examination is required to pass the subject
