Objectives To familiarise students with industry by visits to manufacturers, reading and targeted investigations.

Synopsis Introduction to essential issues in manufacturing, eg workforce issues, competitiveness, advanced manufacturing technology, health and safety and quality concepts. Visits are made to a range of factories, after which students make presentations and reports. A range of operations is considered, for example plastics manufacture, aircraft technology, continuous processes, batch processes and job shops, metals manufacture, motor vehicle and components industries. A student-chosen industry assessment forms the major assignment and there is also a research essay.
