Objectives To develop an understanding of stress and elastic strain, an appreciation of the different mechanisms of heat transfer and their importance in materials processing.

Synopsis Normal and shear stress, stress and strain at a point. Mohr's circle in two dimensions. Stress on a plane of arbitrary orientation. Invariants of stress and strain. Equations of equilibrium and compatibility. Hooke's law. Superposition and St Venant's principle. Von Mises and Tresca theories of yield. Heat transfer by conduction, convection and radiation. Steady state conduction. Overall heat transfer coefficients. Non-steady state conduction: lumped systems, convection b.c.s, transient time - temperature charts. Finite difference methods. Convection: flow over bodies, liquid metal heat transfer. Radiation. Thermally induced residual stress. Casting and forging. Injection moulding of polymers. Hot rolling of steels.
