Applied mechanics

Objectives The student is expected to acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of the principles of mechanics in relation to engineering situations; the description and analysis of engineering systems; physical and mathematical models and their assessment.

Synopsis Experimental mechanics: particle dynamics, experimentation, modelling. Kinematics: position, velocity and acceleration; analysis and application to engineering situations; translational and rotational motion of free and constrained forces, their origin and significance; energy dissipation in mechanical systems; mass moment of inertia; linear and angular momentum. Analysis and synthesis of planar mechanisms. Fundamentals of mechanical vibrations.
