Statistical methods

Objectives The student is expected to acquire a knowledge and understanding of the use of standard techniques of probability and statistical inference; be able to identify which techniques are appropriate for a particular problem and to interpret the results of the statistical analyses; understand the probabilistic and statistical concepts involved and be able to use a statistical package for the various techniques studied.

Synopsis Introductory probability and distribution theory; particular distributions and their applications in engineering, science and technology. Estimation of parameters and tests of hypotheses for one or two sample problems involving means, variances and proportions. Introduction to the method of least squares and its application in analysis of variance, regression and correlation. Introduction to statistical packages and exploratory data analysis.

Assessment Examinations (2 hours): 80% · Assignments: 20%
