Objectives This subject builds upon the introduction to measurements given in GSE2003. The subject extends the concepts of modern instrumentation with particular emphasis on the hardware, software and user interfaces used in the engineering applications of SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems. The overall objective is to gain knowledge and implementation skills concerning the application of modern computers in the industrial measurement and control environment.
Synopsis Introduction to control theory in the engineering
context. Distributed industrial control systems including both local and SCADA
implementations. The use of PC based data acquisition and control hardware.
Data acquisition and logging from remote transducers. Software development for
control implementation using both PC communication ports and commercially
available control/data acquisition cards. Control workstation software design
for integrated industrial control systems including: control algorithms,
annuniciation, virtual instrumentation, remote control actuation and safety
interlock systems. Current issues in remote electrical and optical
communication relevant to control implementation.
Student requirements DE students are required to have access to a Windows 95+
capable computer. Essential software Borland Delphi 3. Lab requirements may be
met by attendance at vacation school, or via duplicated experiments in an
approved industrial situation.
Assessment Theory examination (2 hours): 40% · Laboratory-based assignments: 60% · These are work requirements.
