4 points · 2 hrs lectures, 1 hr tutorial, 1 hr supported self-study · second semester · Gippsland/Distance (2000) · Prerequisite: ENG1201

Objectives The subject aims to impart an understanding of the basic principles of applied mechanics, the mechanics of materials and structures, structural behaviour in relation to axial deformation, torsional deformation, deflection and buckling, various types of stress and strains, and of the way that structural mechanics are applied in practice. It also seeks to develop in the student the skills required to solve applied mechanics problems and the confidence to apply the skills and knowledge gained.

Synopsis The subject introduces a study of normal stress and strain, the stress-strain diagram, elasticity and plasticity, Hook's law, shear stress and strain, allowable stresses and allowable loads, and displacement of axially loaded members. It then covers torsion of circular bars, non-uniform torsion; types of beams; shear force and bending moment relationships between load, shear force and bending moment, and shear force and bending moment diagrams. Normal strains in beams and normal stresses in web of beams with flanges are then discussed, followed by Mohr's circle for plane stress. Consideration is then given to differential equations of the deflection curve, buckling and stability, columns with pinned ends, columns with other support conditions, and elastic and inelastic column behaviour.
