Objectives This subject aims to introduce the communication method of engineering design through drawing and computer-aided drawing (CAD), and to introduce the engineering design process via a group design. Students' skills to be developed through this subject include skills of using CAD packages and skills of teamwork design and fulfilling a design task under pressure.

Synopsis Drawing: This component covers projection of lines and surfaces, letters, numerals, scales; sketching and orthographic projections; projection and isometric drawing; sectioning; conventional representation of common features; dimensioning, fits and tolerance; detail and assembly drawing; introduction to CAD in the engineering workplace; use of CAD for engineering drawings; using CAD as a design tool; CAD exercises. Design projects: This component involves participation in a group design project requiring exposure to elements of feasibility study, scheduling, design, organisation, group communication and teamwork. Development of a simple prototype from concept to fabrication.
