4 points · 26 lecture hours and 26 tutorial/laboratory hours · Second semester · Gippsland/distance · Prerequisite: GEG1303
Objectives The student is expected to (a) understand the principles of fluid flow, and (b) develop functionality with a number of basic analytical methods.
Synopsis (1) Introduction to fluid properties. (2) Fluid statics: pressure forces on submerged surfaces. (3) Concepts of fluid flow: the equation of continuity, conservation of energy - Bernoulli's equation, the momentum equation; viscous effects, Reynolds experiment, laminar and turbulent flow. (4) Friction flow and pipes, friction factor, application of Bernoulli's equation with friction and with addition and extraction of energy. (5) Uniform flow in open channels - Mannings formula. (6) The boundary layer concept, boundary layer separation: drag and lift - simple applications of drag and lift forces. (7) Compressible flow - introduction.
