Objectives To introduce students who have not done chemistry at VCE level to the foundations of chemistry that will be useful during their engineering studies and later professional work in engineering.

Synopsis This subject will expose first-year engineering students who have not done VCE chemistry to those parts of chemistry which are thought to be most relevant to the profession. Emphasis will be placed on the solutions to numerical problems which are related to the subject material. The subject briefly covers the basic building blocks and fundamental concepts of matter and then looks at states of aggregation. These fundamentals are then applied to general chemical reactions, acid and base behaviour, and redox systems. Common inorganic and organic compounds, which are the basis for many engineering materials, are then considered. Interwoven with this subject matter are the ideas of measurement, errors and uncertainties, and efficient problem solving.

Assessment Examination (3 hours): 70% · Weekly tests: 30%
