Objectives To equip students with the necessary tools and techniques to analyse and design engineering information systems, make intelligent decisions using database systems and advanced spreadsheet models.

Synopsis Information system management. Simple SQL queries, join SQL queries, using SQL to model information systems. Analysis and design of engineering information systems. Mapping the physical systems onto logical structures, normalisation process. Designing reports and user input forms. Character-based vs GUI design. Implementing a relational database system. Using spreadsheets to collect and analyse tabular data. Graphical presentation of information. Optimising engineering operations using spreadsheets. Using built-in engineering and financial functions to solve numerical problems. Using spreadsheet goal seekers and solvers to solve linear and non-linear industrial engineering optimisation problems.
