Objectives The student is expected to acquire knowledge and understanding of the functional structure and components of electronic systems and the operating principles of electronic components and subsystems. The student is also expected to develop skills in interpreting manufacturers' specifications and in the selection of commercially available components and subsystems to realise electronic system designs.
Synopsis Introduction to electronic systems and components. Instrumentation systems: transducers, signal conditioning subsystems; instrumentation, isolation and current mode amplifiers; interference control: grounding and shielding. Data acquisition systems: A/D and D/A converters, V/F and F/V converters; multiplexers, sampling and track-hold amplifiers; data acquisition subsystems. Filters: Butterworth, Chebyshev filters; active, universal and switched-capacitor filters. Oscillators and timing systems: LC and crystal oscillators; phase-lock loops; universal timer/counters; modulators and demodulators. Power supply systems: voltage references; linear and switched-mode regulators.
