Power electronics applications

Objectives The student is expected to develop an understanding of the fundamental nature and applications of power electronics; an awareness of power factor, supply current harmonics and emi problems; the ability to apply circuit theory to switching circuits, to perform analysis based on discontinuous current conduction, to design power electronic circuits, to simulate them and layout a printed circuit board using computer programs and to construct a power electronic circuit and find faults; and an appreciation of the difference between the computer simulation of a circuit and its actual performance.

Synopsis Switched-mode power supplies, uninterruptable power supplies, resonant-link converter systems. Advanced PWM and optimal modulation strategies, harmonic considerations. Device rating calculations, thermal considerations, modelling for simulation. Implementation of converter control using digital logic and microprocessors. Selected industrial applications.

Assessment Examination (2 hours): 70% · Written: 15% · Laboratory work: 15%
