Objectives The student is expected to develop a basic understanding of transmission line theory, external and internal overvoltages and protection methods in electrical power systems and a knowledge of high voltage test techniques.
Synopsis Protection zones in power systems; differential, distance and pilot wire protection; physics of circuit interruption; circuit breakers; current chopping and restriking voltages. Underground cables; transmission line phenomena; calculation of surge performance. Lightning phenomena and its effect on a power system. High voltage measurement and testing; insulation coordination; partial discharges; ageing of insulation.
Assessment Examination (2 hours): 60% · Assignments: 20% · Laboratory work: 20%
