Objectives The student is expected to develop scientific awareness and literacy, along with an understanding of basic knowledge and skills relevant to the physical sciences. On completing this course, the student is expected to be able to read with understanding first-level tertiary texts in chemistry, physics or the earth sciences.

Synopsis Areas of study include scientific method; measurement; Newton's laws of motion, gravity, work and power; states and properties of matter; atoms and molecules; chemical equations and stoichiometry; radioactivity; electromagnetic radiation and the nature of light; modern atomic theory; chemical bonding; the periodic table; electricity and magnetism; chemical equilibrium; acids and bases; introduction to organic chemistry.
