Aims

The Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) is aimed towards graduates who wish to teach in the secondary school environment. It should be noted that the course is not available to students resident overseas.

Professional recognition

The course is recognised by all State Ministries of Education, Catholic Education Office and Private Schools Board.

Entry requirements

The Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) is open to applicants with an approved degree (or equivalent qualification) from a recognised tertiary institution, in a discipline appropriate to the teaching subjects (methods) offered by the Faculty of Education, Gippsland campus.

Special requirements

It is desirable for students to have access to a personal computer (Windows or Macintosh). Non-compulsory weekend schools may be offered in some subjects.

Course structure

The course

Students are required to complete the following subjects (each worth twelve credit points) over two-years part-time by distance education.

Year one

Year two

As well as completing the four subjects students must successfully complete forty-five (45) days of supervised school experience. This requirement forms an essential part of subjects GEC5501 and GEC5502 and must be completed in both year one and year two of the course.

Method subjects

Teaching method subjects are offered in the following areas:

Students must undertake two single methods (eg English and social studies; maths and social studies; maths and science), or a double method (eg double visual arts; double science) where double methods are offered. Enrolment in methods requires a submajor or major in the discipline (eg a major in English or maths as appropriate).

Assessment

Assessment is by way of a combination of tasks, with an examination also conducted for GEC5501, GEC5502 and GEC5503.

Credits/exemptions

Credit may be granted for equivalent study of a Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) at another tertiary institution. However, no credits/ exemptions will be granted for the practice teaching requirement of the course which accounts for forty-five days of supervised teaching.

Completed applications

Completed applications are to be forwarded to the senior administrator, Faculty of Education, Monash University Gippsland campus, Churchill, Victoria, 3842, by 18 September 1998 to be considered for a first-round offer.
