Aims

This course provides an educational program that equips students for ethical and competent social welfare practice in a changing social and political environment.

Professional recognition

The course is recognised by the Victorian Public Service, Commonwealth Public Service Board and the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a three-year degree and must have completed the equivalent of one year's study in either sociology and psychology. Open learning study in these disciplines is also acceptable in conjunction with a degree. Selection will include assessment of applicants suitability for social welfare and all applicants must complete a social welfare course administration form, which can be obtained from the Course Inquiries Centre, telephone 1800 671845 or from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences on (03) 5122 6339 or (03) 9902 6339.

Special requirements

Attendance

Students must be aware of the attendance requirements for certain social welfare subjects, and should take the cost of this into account before applying for entry to the course.
Students in the Graduate Diploma of Arts (Social Welfare) must attend the Gippsland campus for one three-day residential workshop during the first semester. Students will also be required to undertake a sixty-day field education placement during the second year as well as a sixteen-day placement in semester two of the first year.

Course structure

The course of study is normally two years by distance education. In order to complete the Graduate Diploma of Arts (Social Welfare) a student must complete all seven compulsory subjects listed below.
