This course introduces the theory and practice of management in the public sector and is particularly aimed at those from the public sector or those interested in the management of government. Emphasis is given to new models of public management, problems of accountability and control, financial management, institutions, bureaucracy and similarities and differences between public and private management. On completion of this subject students should be familiar with theories of management in the public sector; the change from a traditional bureaucratic model of administration to a market-based managerial model; and to understand the debate over managerialism.
