MAT1085

Mathematics 1B

With MAT1055, this subject is designed to prepare students for the application of methods of calculus and linear algebra in science, engineering and other areas of mathematics. Topics covered include calculus and linear algebra. Calculus: complex numbers; hyperbolic functions and their inverses; extension of systematic indefinite integration beyond MAT1055; extension of differential equations including homogeneous and linear ODEs; convergence of series; Taylor's theorem; partial differentiation and local extrema of functions of two variables. Linear algebra: linear systems of equations and row-reduction algorithms; linear dependence of vectors and sub-spaces of Euclidean n-space; eigenvalues and eigenvectors; diagonalistion of matrices; applications to mechanical and electrical systems and population growth models.
