History of childhood

This subject will introduce students to the history of childhood 1450-present in a European and Australian context and will introduce students to techniques of historical analysis. The main topics will be: issues in the historiography of childhood; childhood in the late medieval period 1300-1450; the rise of individualism and the role of the child 1500-1700; the industrial revolution and the changing role of childhood 1760-1860; mass society and the institutionalised childhood 1860-1900; ideology and childhood in the twentieth century.
