Developments in primary music education

The subject covers the philosophy and practices of classroom music education. It develops skills and understandings in music education required in undergraduate subjects. The focus will be on music curricula -- their theoretical underpinning, development, implementation and evaluation. Influential philosophical approaches to music education, such as those of Swanwick, Reimer, Paynter and Elliott will be considered. Current classroom music practices and pedagogical approaches, such as those of Orff, Kodaly, Dalcroze and Schafer will be investigated. The potential role of music in integrated programs will be emphasised.
