Introduces the theory and practice of counselling. It
provides a broad overview of the theories which underpin modern counselling and
introduces basic skills required if successful counselling is to occur.
Students demonstrate a basic level of competence in practical counselling;
outline a range of current psychological theories as they relate to the
practice of counselling; and outline the therapeutic techniques which derive
from each of the different theories.
Strand 1 focuses on techniques of counselling, including: basic attending and
relationship skills; information gathering; getting client commitment to
change; planning for and monitoring change.
Strand 2 focuses on a range of theories about factors underlying the
development of dysfunctional patterns of living and treatment of such
difficulties, including theories about personality; treatment models;
recommended client groups; and research findings.
