This subject presents the concepts of health education and promotion in a rural environment. It reviews major developments, theories and paradigms of health and discusses behavioural changes which influence health practices. The principles and philosophies of contemporary initiatives taken by the World Health Organisation, national and state governments are reviewed. They are then analysed in relation to their effects on rural health strategies. These initiatives include Primary Health Care, Health for All by the Year 2000, the Ottowa Charter for Health Promotion and Healthy Cities. The participants will have the opportunity to develop education skills focusing on individuals, groups and populations.
