The Graduate Diploma in Retail and Wholesale Management is designed to cater for experienced retail managers, generally graduates from disciplines other than retail/marketing, who wish to undertake study in retail business subjects at the graduate level.

Course objectives

The objectives of the course focus on eight key areas of study through which the students will be able to:

apply marketing theory and practices to the development of a business marketing planning strategy
integrate understanding of organisational behaviour and management functions to influence performance in organisations
demonstrate an understanding of the components of a retail business strategy through the application of retail strategic and financial planning
articulate the impact of developments in retail technology and the issues facing retail executives
apply consumer behaviour theory to the development of retail marketing strategies
apply the tools of financial analysis, forecasting, budgeting and performance measurement to retail business
develop a strategic view of international retail markets in the context of issues facing retail executives
integrate the functions operating in a business to enable a competitive and comparative strategic analysis

Admission requirements

Applicants require a pass degree in a discipline other than marketing/retail or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution, plus a minimum of three years relevant employment experience, or an executive certificate from this faculty with an average grade of credit or above. The course is offered off-campus and will therefore be available to retail managers based in retail or related service organisations anywhere in Australia or abroad. Applicants from abroad will need to meet the university's requirements regarding proficiency in English.

Fees

This is a fee-paying course. Candidates should consult the Department of Marketing as to the 1999 course fee. Course fees are set and reviewed annually and are therefore subject to change.

Duration

The Graduate Diploma in Retail and Wholesale Management is normally completed in four semesters of part-time study.

Mode of offering

The course is offered by distance education from the Department of Marketing, Caulfield campus.

Credit for work done previously

Candidates may be eligible for up to four credit exemptions where they have completed subjects considered to be equivalent to particular subjects in the Graduate Diploma in Retail Business. Where candidates have completed subjects similar in content, but not equivalent to, particular subjects in the course, the course director may request another suitable subject be substituted.

Professional recognition

The course is recognised by the Australian Retailers' Association. Course graduates employed in the retail industry are eligible to apply for graduate membership.

Progression to further studies

Students who successfully complete the Graduate Diploma in Retail and Wholesale Management with an average grade of credit or above may apply for admission to the Master of Business (Retail and Wholesale).
