Objectives The subject provides an economic analysis of the pharmaceutical industry and pharmaceutical products. It considers the structure of the industry and the inter-relationship between the nature of the product, the market structure and government regulation. It considers different regulatory regimes from an economic perspective and the role of economic evaluation in promoting an efficient use of drugs. The subject includes issues in the economic analysis of drugs alongside trial including techniques of health outcome measurement.

Synopsis Part one looks at the economics of the pharmaceutical industry including the market for pharmaceuticals and its regulation internationally and in Australia. Part two looks at the principles of economic evaluation of the costs and outcomes of pharmaceutical products, and provides a guide to best practice with particular emphasis on clinical trials and protocol design.

Assessment Two assignments (each 1500 words): 40% · Presentation at compulsory seminar in Melbourne: 20% · Examination (3 hours): 40%
