Introduction to health economics

Objectives This subject will provide students with an understanding of the economic approach to resource allocation in general and alternative ways of thinking about health service provision. It will provide a descriptive framework of the Australian health care system from an economic perspective including an analysis of the reasons for growth in expenditure. It introduces students to the use of economic tools of analysis in health and the market for health care.

Synopsis There are three units. The first unit presents an analysis of alternative arrangements for the finance and delivery of health services from an economic perspective. The second unit provides the microeconomic tools to analyse the market for health including concepts of efficiency and equity. The third unit applies microeconomic principles to the analysis of health insurance and health care markets.

Assessment Two assignments (each 1500 words): 50% · Examination (3 hours): 50%
