Objectives On completion of this subject students
should have developed a practical knowledge of simple grammatical structures;
skills to read short simple texts in Chinese; the ability to write short notes
and compositions in Chinese characters; an initial understanding of the
necessity to translate contextually rather than literally.
Synopsis Elementary spoken and written Chinese; short simple readings;
classroom discussions of translations; discussion of aspects of Chinese culture
relevant to the use of language.
Assessment Written homework: 20% · Two examinations (each 2 hours): 50% · Aural and oral tests: 30%
