Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should understand the operation at a basic level of banking and financial institutions in Southeast Asian nations and the nature of regional banking and finance transactions; have a working knowledge of the banking and financial institutions operating in Southeast Asia; appreciate the significance of relations between Australian banking and finance institutions and those of the Southeast Asian region; know how to follow trends and changes in the banking and finance sector and be aware of their importance in planning of investment strategies.
Synopsis Topics include a comparative study of the various banking and financial systems in the Southeast Asian region. Issues explored include development policies; regulation, exchange rate regimes; capital market structures and foreign investment incentives. An analysis and comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of the various countries' financial structures and formation is made and cultural aspects, investment opportunities and future are explored.
Assessment Research paper (5000 words): 50% · Examination (3 hours): 50% · or research paper (10,000-12,000 words): 100% · Students selecting this second option are also required to present a 10-minute class paper presentation on their chosen topic of research.
