The School of Humanities and Social Sciences offers the following graduate programs:

A brief explanation of each of these programs follows. Students should note that full details of regulations are contained in the Arts graduate handbook. Doctor of Philosophy

It is possible to undertake study for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy through the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Applicants should possess a degree of master or a degree of bachelor with honours class I or IIA (or equivalent). Further information is available in the Monash University PhD and EdD information handbook. Acceptance of applications will be subject to the availability of suitable supervisors and resources within the school.
A candidate may be enrolled on either a full-time or part-time basis. Full-time candidature is generally for a period of four years whilst part-time candidates have up to eight years to submit. Extensions are rarely given beyond the maximum completion timeframes. Candidates whether full-time or part-time must be able to attend the university regularly.

Master of Arts by research

The school offers a masters degree by research. The minimum qualification for admission is a bachelors degree requiring at least four years of full-time study, normally including a research component in the fourth year, leading to an honours degree at first or upper second class level. Entry to the course is subject to the proposed research being within the capacity of the applicant and the school in terms of supervision and resources.
The course may be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis. The maximum duration of candidature is three years full-time or five years part-time, and candidates whether full-time or part-time must be able to attend the university regularly.
