General information

On the recommendation of the head of the department or director of the centre concerned and with the approval of the Committee for Graduate Studies, the faculty may in special circumstances grant advanced standing (or credit) for postgraduate work already completed at Monash University or at another tertiary institution, including overseas universities. Advanced standing will not normally be granted for subjects undertaken in a course where the student has subsequently taken out a degree or an award of any kind.
Irrespective of advanced standing limits outlined below, students will normally always be required to complete any core subjects specified for their program.

When to apply for advanced standing and details of documentation required

Advanced standing (or credit) in a postgraduate program in the Faculty of Arts must be applied for at the time of entry into the program and will not be granted retrospectively. Full details of subjects for which advanced standing is sought must be provided, by means of an official transcript, with grades (and marks, if possible). The applicant should also indicate the number of points each subject is worth, the total number of points for the whole course and what percentage the subject in question was of the total course.
Outlined below are the criteria for granting of advanced standing in each graduate program in the Faculty of Arts. Please note that these criteria apply to students starting their program in 1998 or subsequent years; they will not be applied retrospectively to students who started before 1998.

Faculty/Graduate Certificate

Advanced standing will not normally be granted in the Faculty Certificate or Graduate Certificate, unless the applicant has completed one or more of the subjects listed under the certificate, but has not taken out an award or a degree for the subject(s) in another program.

Graduate diplomas of Arts, Postgraduate diplomas of Arts, Graduate Diploma of Environmental Science, Graduate Diploma of Corporate Environmental Management, Graduate Diploma of Bioethics

Students who have completed relevant subjects at fourth-year level may apply for a maximum of 50 per cent advanced standing. Advanced standing will not normally be granted for subjects undertaken in a course where the student has subsequently taken out a degree or an award of any kind.
Students with a relevant faculty certificate (please refer to guidelines in each program) completed at fourth-year level with grades of at least credit average may obtain a maximum of 50 per cent (twenty-four points) credit towards their graduate or postgraduate diploma. No student may obtain more than 50 per cent credit in total.

Masters qualifying

Students who have completed relevant subjects at fourth-year level with grades of credit or above may apply for a maximum of 50 per cent credit. Advanced standing will not normally be granted for subjects undertaken in a course where the student has subsequently taken out a degree or an award of any kind. Students undertaking a masters qualifying (MQual) with a research component program will not normally be granted advanced standing for, or exemption from, the research component.

Master of Arts, Master of Bioethics, Master of Environmental Science and Master of Social Work by coursework

Students who have completed relevant subjects at fifth-year level with grades of distinction or above may apply for a maximum of 50 per cent credit. Advanced standing will not normally be granted for subjects undertaken in a course where the student has subsequently taken out a degree or an award of any kind.

Master of Arts, Master of Environmental Science by research and coursework combined

Advanced standing will not normally be granted for the coursework component in a 66 per cent or a 75 per cent masters research degree.
