The
economic history discipline of the Department of Economics offers a major
sequence to arts students on the Clayton campus, which includes ECC1510
(Economic history: world economic leadership) and ECC1520 (Economic history:
Japan and Australia), and subjects chosen from seven second-year, and eight
third-year economic history subjects. With the permission of the head of
Economic History, students who have the appropriate prerequisites may be
permitted to substitute a third-year economics subject for one of the
third-year economic history subjects. (See the 'Economics' section in this
handbook for major and minor sequences in economics and economic studies, which
may incorporate economic history subjects.) Students wishing to complete a
minor sequence are recommended to take ECC1510 (Economic history: world
economic leadership), ECC1520 (Economic history: Japan and Australia), ECC2510
(Australian economic history) and ECC2550 (Business in Asia). The first-year
subjects are valued at six points towards the BA degree, and each of the second
and third-year subjects is valued at eight points.
Honours studies in economic history are available in the Faculty of Arts.
Departments may grant an extension of time for submission of the honours thesis
or for final coursework up to the last day of the examination period of the
semester in which the work is due. Applications for extensions beyond this date
must be made to the Committee for Undergraduate Studies.
All students enrolling in subjects taught by the Department of Economics must
have their enrolment approved by an adviser in the office of the Faculty of
Business and Economics. Where there is a choice of lecture groups, students
will normally be allocated to a group at the time of enrolment and may not
change without permission.
For details of course content and reference books for economic history
subjects, students should consult the entry for economic history in the
Department of Economics section of the handbook for the Faculty of Business and
Economics.
The
Department of Management teaches a number of management-related subjects which
comprise one stream of the BCom. These subjects are designed to increase
students' knowledge of management and organisation behaviour as academic fields
of study, and to impart knowledge and skills considered necessary to be
competent in the management of public and private sector organisations.
These subjects are available to Faculty of Arts students as part of the free 52
points that students may take towards the BA degree. No previous study of
management is required.
A
number of second-year subjects offered by the Department of Management are
available to students from other faculties without the prerequisites of MGC1020
or MGC1030. In those cases it may be considered that an equivalent body of
knowledge has been gained by students in their existing studies. No more than
three such subjects may be undertaken. Students wishing to enrol for a
second-year subject without the prerequisite should consult the Department of
Management.
For details of second and third-year management subjects which are available,
consult the entries under management in the Business and Economics handbook.
