All subjects offered at Monash University are represented by a code which
consists of a three-letter prefix followed by four numbers. The three-letter
prefix is used to indicate the discipline, thus any subject with the prefix PHL
is a philosophy subject, ie PHL1010 (Introduction to Philosophy A).
It is also useful to note that the first number following the prefix indicates
the year level at which the subject is offered. Thus any subject with the
number '1' following its three-letter prefix is a first-year level subject, any
subject with the number '2' following its three letter prefix is a second-year
level subject and any subject with the number '3' following its three letter
prefix is a third-year level subject.
Below is a table of the three-letter prefixes used in the Faculty of Arts.
Beside each prefix is the discipline it represents and the school or centre to
which it refers.
