Debating difference: Gender, race and public policy

Objectives On completion of this subject, students should have developed a situated understanding of how various forms of 'difference' operate in the public domain and why specific legislation addressing gender and racial difference has emerged; a working knowledge of a range of key concepts relevant to the development, implementation and evaluation of public policy concerning gender and racial difference; skills in the critical analysis of relevant policy documents; enhanced skills in written and verbal expression and in the development of arguments; enhanced research skills.

Synopsis This subject will introduce students to a range of contemporary debates in the areas of gender, race and public policy. It will examine how recent Australian legislation and policy have sought to account for the interests, rights and opportunities of differently positioned social subjects. It will explore the history of these policy developments, the philosophies underpinning them, and on-going debates surrounding their implementation and operation. It will explore key concepts such as equity, discrimination, assimilation, affirmative action, multiculturalism, sexual harassment and racial vilification. Students will be encouraged to explore policy-in-action through fieldwork exercises.
