Objectives On completion of this subject and its continuation, UKR1080, students should have a knowledge of Ukrainian grammar based on D H Struk, Ukrainian for undergraduates; an advanced vocabulary relating to selected subjects from everyday life; and an ability to read, write, speak and understand standard Ukrainian correctly at the level of non-technical communication. Students should also have a knowledge of the main developments in Ukrainian literature from the 1960s to the present day and of representative works of poetry and short prose from that period.

Synopsis (i) Language: a review of Ukrainian grammar; development of conversation and composition skills using texts on contemporary themes. (ii) Literature and society: an introduction to major cultural, social and political developments in Ukraine since 1953, with a focus on the contemporary situation. Selected literary texts of the period are studied.

Assessment Examinations (2 hours): 25% - Language Weekly homework: 25% - Two 10-minute tutorial papers: 10% - Test (30 minutes): 10% - Literature and culture Essay (1500 words): 20% - Tutorial paper: 10%
