Objectives As a member of a research team, students are expected to (1) experience the benefits and difficulties of working with others in doing applied social research, (2) gain practical experience of analysing and researching a social policy issue, and (3) learn to write a research report designed for a general audience.

Synopsis Students as a group will carry out a research project to get practical experience of doing team research. The research topic may change from year to year, depending on the member of staff available to supervise the project. Students will be expected to take responsibility for all steps of the research process and to be involved in all practical aspects of data collection and analysis. Although the study will be carried out as a group project, students must write individual research reports, which will be marked by two independent examiners.

Assessment Research report (15,000-18,000 words): 80% -Practical contributions to the overall research project: 20%
