Nineteenth-century Spanish literature

Objectives Students successfully completing this subject should have developed a broad understanding of the historical social events that took place in Spain in the nineteenth century, the changes these events brought about and the impact of those changes on literary/artistic production.

Synopsis This subject explores the different forms of literary/artistic forms that took hold in Spain during the nineteenth century. Starting with a study of romantic poetry and drama, the emphasis will be on the novels written after 1868, in an attempt to establish the relationship between 'La Gloriosa' (the revolution of 1868), the society it sought to establish and the new forms novel-writing took in the late 1800s.

Assessment Examination (2 hours): 30% - Research project 20% - Oral presentation 10% - Final essay (3000 words): 40%
